Eligibility Criteria
To register a marriage in Delhi, you must meet the following criteria under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, or the Special Marriage Act, 1954:
- The groom must be at least **21 years** of age and the bride at least **18 years**.
- Both parties must be of sound mind and capable of giving valid consent.
- Neither party should have a living spouse at the time of marriage.
- The marriage must be solemnized in Delhi, or at least one of the parties must have been a resident of Delhi for at least 30 days.
- The parties must not be within the degrees of prohibited relationship.
Required Documents
Make sure you have all the necessary documents in hand before you begin the online application process. You will need to upload scanned copies of these documents. The list below is for both the bride and the groom, as well as the witnesses.
- Proof of Identity: Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, or Passport.
- Proof of Age: Birth Certificate, Matriculation (10th) Certificate, or Passport.
- Proof of Residence: Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Ration Card, or utility bills.
- Photographs: Two passport-sized photographs of each person (bride, groom, and witnesses), and one joint wedding photo.
- Marriage Proof: A wedding invitation card or a certificate from the priest/religious institution.
- Affidavit: A notarized affidavit from both parties stating their marital status, date of birth, and nationality.
- Witness Documents: Aadhaar Card or other identity/address proof of two witnesses.
How to Apply for a Marriage Certificate
The application for a marriage certificate is done online through the official e-District Delhi portal. However, an in-person visit to the SDM office is mandatory for final verification.
- Visit the Portal: Go to the official e-District Delhi portal.
- Register/Login: If you are a new user, register by providing your Aadhaar number. Existing users can log in directly.
- Select the Service: Under "Apply for Services," select "Issuance of Marriage Certificate" and choose the relevant act (Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act).
- Fill the Form: Complete the online application form with accurate details of both partners, their parents, and witnesses.
- Upload Documents: Upload the scanned copies of all the required documents.
- Book an Appointment: After submitting the application, you will be prompted to book a date and time to visit the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office for physical verification.
- Pay the Fee: Pay the application fee online or at the SDM office on the day of your appointment.
- Visit the SDM Office: On the scheduled date, both parties and the two witnesses must appear at the SDM office with all original documents for verification. The certificate will be issued after the verification is complete.
