Introduction to eCourts Services

The eCourts project is a flagship initiative of the Government of India, managed by the e-Committee of the Supreme Court of India, aimed at revolutionizing the Indian judiciary through technology. It provides a wide array of services, with online case status checking being one of the most used and beneficial features for litigants, lawyers, police, and government agencies.

Through the eCourts portal and mobile app, you can track the real-time status of your cases, view court orders/judgments, and check cause lists (daily listings of cases).

How to Check Your Court Case Status Online

The eCourts services offer multiple ways to search for your case status. The most common and efficient method is using the CNR (Case Number Record).

Method 1: Search by CNR Number (Recommended)

The CNR (Case Number Record) is a unique 16-digit alphanumeric number assigned to every case filed in District and Taluka Courts across the country. It's the quickest way to find your case details.

  1. Visit the eCourts Services Portal: Go to the official eCourts website: https://services.ecourts.gov.in/
  2. Enter CNR: On the homepage, you will see a prominent search box for "CNR Number." Enter the 16-digit CNR number without any hyphens or spaces.
  3. Enter Captcha: Solve the captcha shown on the screen (alphanumeric characters).
  4. Click Search: Click the "Search" button.
  5. View Details: The current status and entire history of the case will be displayed.

Method 2: Search by Other Criteria (If CNR is Unknown)

If you do not have the CNR number, you can still search using other details. On the eCourts website, look for the "Case Status" section or tab, and then choose your desired search criteria:

  1. Select State, District, and Court Complex: First, you will typically need to select the State, District, and specific Court Complex (e.g., District Court, Civil Court, etc.) where your case is filed.
  2. Choose Search Option: Select one of the following search options:
    • Case Number:
      • Select the Case Type (e.g., Civil Suit, Criminal Appeal, FIR, etc.).
      • Enter the Case Registration Number (e.g., 1234).
      • Enter the Case Registration Year.
      • Enter the Captcha and click "Go."
    • Party Name:
      • Enter the Party Name (e.g., Petitioner/Respondent/Plaintiff/Defendant). You can enter a partial name (minimum 3 characters).
      • Enter the Case Registration Year (optional, but helps narrow the search).
      • Select 'Pending', 'Disposed', or 'Both' for case status.
      • Enter the Captcha and click "Go."
    • Advocate Name:
      • Enter the name of the Advocate (in full or part) or their Bar Registration Number.
      • Select 'Pending', 'Disposed', or 'Both' for case status.
      • Enter the Captcha and click "Go."
    • FIR Number:
      • Select the Police Station.
      • Enter the FIR Number.
      • Enter the FIR Year.
      • Select 'Pending', 'Disposed', or 'Both' for case status.
      • Enter the Captcha and click "Go."
    • Act Wise: Search by specific Acts and Sections under which the case is filed.
    • Case Type: Browse cases by specific case types filed in a given year.
    • Filing Number: If you have the filing number and year before the case was registered.
  3. Review Search Results: A list of cases matching your criteria will be displayed. Click on the relevant case number or "View" button to see the detailed history.

For High Courts:

For cases in High Courts, use the eCourts High Court Services portal: https://hcservices.ecourts.gov.in/. The search options are similar (CNR, Case Number, Party Name, Advocate Name, etc.), but you'll first select the specific High Court and its bench.

For Supreme Court:

For cases in the Supreme Court of India, visit its official website's case status section: https://www.sci.gov.in/case-status/. You can search by Case Number, Diary Number, CNR, AOR Code, or Party Name.
